Milberg Tadler Phillips Grossman LLP Announces Investigation of Marriott/ Starwood Data Breach

New York – On November 30, 2018, Marriott International Inc. announced a massive breach of the reservation system of its subsidiary Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, LLC, which is owned and operated by Marriott.

Up to 500 million users were impacted by the breach of the reservation system, which collected many pieces of personally identifiable information (PII), including name, postal address, email address, date and place of birth, important milestones such as birthdays, passport number, payment card number, and travel itinerary. Such information is extremely valuable to digital criminals and identity thieves, who can use the PII to defraud consumers out of money or even commit crimes under their names.

Marriott failed to detect the breach for over four years, announcing that the breach began in 2014 and possibly earlier. Marriott first detected the breach on September 8, 2018, but did not report it publicly until November 30, 2018. Marriott stated that it would notify by email Starwood customers whose information was taken in the breach.
