Karl J. Amelchenko

Partner

Karl Amelchenko is a Raleigh, North Carolina trial attorney who only represents injured people and those taken advantage of. Mr. Amelchenko has dedicated his practice to holding accountable insurance companies, large corporations, and those who negligently and recklessly hurt others then refuse to take responsibility for their actions.

As Milberg Partner, Mr. Amelchenko handles complex litigation including claims brought pursuant to the Medicare Secondary Payer Act, bad-faith insurance, medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, truck and car accidents, and whistle-blower actions. He has secured multiple million-dollar settlements and verdicts for his clients.

Since 2021, Mr. Amelchenko has helped to spearhead Milberg’s efforts to protect the Medicare Trust Fund by forcing the country’s largest insurance companies to pay billions of dollars of medical bills for which they are responsible. Mr. Amelchenko represents the recovery rights of HMOs—who have been paying for medical care for their insureds for decades—where insurers such as State Farm, Liberty Mutual, GEICO, and Allstate have ignored federal statutes which make clear they are responsible for these bills.

He is also currently working with hundreds of homeowners in the United States Virgin Islands who were defrauded out of insurance proceeds related to losses they sustained in Hurricanes Maria and Irene. Here, property insurers took homeowners’ premium payments for years, then refused to pay hundreds of millions of dollars rightfully due to the homeowners to simply better their own bottom lines, leaving some of the most vulnerable among us to fend for themselves in unlivable conditions.

Mr. Amelchenko spent a decade practicing medical malpractice and catastrophic injury in North Carolina, trying numerous cases to successful verdicts. He maintains an active presence in these areas. He has been recognized by his peers as an expert in medical malpractice via various leadership positions in the Professional Negligence Section of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Many North Carolina personal injury law firms consult with Mr. Amelchenko when presented with a medical malpractice case.

Mr. Amelchenko earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law and his undergraduate degrees from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington in formal logic and international political economy. While at Wake Forest, he was the captain of the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Trial Team. He received the Goldberg Award for Trial Advocacy upon graduation as the school’s top trial advocate in both proficiency and ethics.

Mr. Amelchenko is co-chair of the yearly American Association for Justice (AAJ) Trial Advocacy Competition in Raleigh, NC. He is a member of AAJ, NCAJ, and Public Justice, a national non-profit legal advocacy organization protecting consumers, employees, civil rights, and the environment. Mr. Amelchenko is deeply committed to Raleigh, The Triangle, and North Carolina as a whole, but has soft spots for New Jersey and South Florida, as well.

Mr. Amelchenko is AV-Rated by his peers and has been named a Super Lawyer every year since 2011.
